A Rocky Start - Genesis 30:1-24

What is the importance of a name? This passage marks the beginning of the twelve tribes of Israel. Eleven of Jacob’s twelve sons are born by the end of this passage. But far from the glorious blessings and bliss promised by God to Jacob and his descendants, the names of his sons reflect sadness and selfishness, sin and suffering, strife and struggle. 

In the midst of Leah and Rachel's suffering, God sees them, and demonstrates his sovereign love toward them. But the cycle of sin continues. Who will have a name great enough to inherit the promises of God and lead his people into the promises?
