A Saviour is Born | Exodus 1:22-2:10
On the 6 June 1944, or what was known as “D-Day”, a mass of Allied forced landed on the beaches of Normandy, France in order to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny. Tens of thousands of troops from all over the world (South Africa included), with military hardware landed in the early hours of that morning to face intense resistance from the Germans. This operation had been months in the making. It was the result of meticulous planning, co-ordination and even deception. Everything had to be perfectly set in place for that event to succeed. If there was but one cog missing, everything would fall apart. Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister at the time, said in the light of the event, “Everything proceeded according to plan. And what a plan!” At the end of that day, the Allies had successfully established a beachhead on the shores of France and in a matter of months, Hitler was dead and the Nazis were defeated.
In this text, we see a much more significant plan beginning to unfold. We see the early stages of God’s plan to redeem his own people from slavery in Egypt. We are introduced to the main character in this plan, a new-born baby named Moses. He is destined to become the saviour of his people. What we will see is that God is involved in every little detail of his life, preparing him for the task God has called him to undertake. Nothing happens by chance – everything is proceeding exactly according to God’s sovereign plan. We shall see that God uses all things according to his purpose to save a people for himself.
