God’s Treasured Possession | Exodus 19
As in any relationship, whether it’s marriage, or a friendship, or your relationship with your employer; boundaries and expectations have to be set and clearly communicated in order to ensure the success of that relationship. Good relationships typically don’t happen without some sort of a structure to guide them.
We’ve arrived at a hugely significant part of the Exodus narrative. God has delivered Israel – his “treasured possession” out of Egypt and has brought them to Mount Sinai where he will clarify and establish his relationship to them. He will do this through a covenant, with Moses as its mediator. This covenant – what we know as the Mosaic Covenant – will form the bedrock of how God relates to his people Israel and will guide their existence in the Promised Land that the Lord is about to give them. An important part of this covenant is summed up in the Ten Commandments which we’re going to camp out on over the coming weeks.
What we’re going to see is that this covenantal arrangement is not an end in itself. Israel will receive a law that they’re unable to keep and they will come before the presence of God whom they’re unable to approach. Instead, we’re going to see that this covenant ultimately points us to Christ and the glories of the new covenant. Because Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, we can approach God freely.
