Grace through Wickedness - Genesis 38
We live in interesting times here in South Africa. There is a strong likelihood that our government has been selling arms to Russia, aiding them in the war against Ukraine. Us Durbanites are going to get our fair share of loadshedding starting this week. And laws are about to be passed that will severely restrict minorities from being employed in the private sector. This can seem overwhelming and we can feel helpless at times to be in the midst of such injustice, evil and wickedness. We have to ask, where is God in all this? Can he still accomplish his purposes in this mess, in this sin-cursed world?
Wicked and sordid events unfold in our passage this morning. We are introduced to Judah and his sons, and their acts of wickedness. We can only understand just how wicked they are by looking back to Genesis 12 and 15. There God promises Abraham that he will multiply his offspring – as numerous as the stars in the sky and that through his seed all the nations of the world will be blessed. Judah is Abraham’s great-grandson and as we will see in this text, he and his sons intentionally try to frustrate these promises that God made to Abraham, because of their own selfishness and greed. What we will see is that because God is sovereign and faithful, his plans cannot be thwarted and he will achieve his purposes even through human sinfulness and faithlessness.
Preacher: Rev. Antonio Coppola.
