The Ark of the Covenant | Exodus 25:9-22
This Christmas, many of us are going to gather with family, meet together over a hearty meal and warm fellowship and celebrate the incarnation of our Saviour. It’s a time where our families can catch up, where we can enjoy each other’s company, relax, unwind and dwell in each other’s presence.
In this passage, God gives Moses instructions on how to build the Ark of the Covenant. This wooden box, overlaid with gold, with two figures of angels upon it, containing the two tablets of the law, will be the place where God meets with his people – where he will dwell with them as their covenant God, drawing near to them. Yet because God is holy, and his people are lawbreakers – this meeting is not like a casual Christmas party. God’s people deserve his wrath, not his favour, because he is holy and they are sinners. Built into the architecture of the Ark of the Covenant is the solution to this problem. We’ll see that because Jesus’ blood has been shed on the mercy seat, sinners are reconciled to God so that God can dwell among his people.
