The Seventh Commandment: The Sanctity of Marriage | Exodus 20:14
In most movies and series that you watch these days, you’ll typically see two people who fall in love and then almost immediately they’re sleeping together, quite obviously not married. This quick progression is presented absolutely natural and normal. In fact what is portrayed as abnormal and unnatural is people who wait until marriage. The sad thing is that this view in not just in the movies, but has almost been adopted wholesale by most people, even many professing Christians unfortunately, as our culture has been very effective at catechising us in this regard.
What this all betrays is frankly a very low view of sex and ultimately marriage. Sex is too often seen as something common, purely a bodily function, something that you do for convenience sake with whomever you are in love at a particular time, with commitment being optional.
In stark contrast to this popular low view of sex and marriage, God’s view of sex is infinitely higher. He has designed it to be something special and sacred to be shared between husband and wife in order to draw them closer, as one flesh, in their life-long covenant bond of love, to bear fruit, to multiply their joy and intimacy and to bring him glory. It is precisely for these reasons that the Seventh Commandment prohibits the desecration of the marriage bed. The command to not commit adultery not only prohibits adultery, but has implications for all sexual conduct. What we’ll see in this sermon is that because God created the institution of marriage, we are to jealously guard the marriage bed.
