Many of us have been in churches where money is spoken about in almost every sermon. You're typically guilt tripped into giving more money, with the promise that the more you give, the more God will bless you with more money or will heal your sickness. This sort of teaching is unfortunate evidence of the widespread influence of the prosperity gospel in our church context.
It is easy in response to having been exposed to this manipulative prosperity gospel teaching to react in another extreme direction, whereby we don’t speak of money at all, and in fact view it as something unspiritual, bad in itself and unconnected and irrelevant to our Christian faith.
Yet biblical teaching on money is neither of these extremes. The Bible definitely does not teach that we are to give money so that God can give us more money. Nor does the Bible teach that money is in itself unspiritual, in fact it teaches quite the opposite, that how we use money has a direct connection with our heart toward the Lord.
We’ve reached the final verses of this letter to the Philippians. In these few concluding verses, Paul talks about money. He thanks the Philippian church for supporting him financially, even though they were a very poor church. As we look at these verses this morning, we’ll observe some important biblical truths regarding how we are to steward money as believers in Christ. We’ll see that because God is abundant in riches, he will provide for us richly through his grace, so that we can bless others for the sake of the gospel – we’ll see that we’re blessed in order to be a blessing.

As South Africans, there are many reasons for us to be anxious – whether it’s crime, the way our country is governed, the economy, or insecurity about the future. It's not only here in South Africa, but the world over. There is a real fracturing especially in Western culture. Lots of us struggle with anxiety.
In a similar way, the Philippian church was also experiencing anxiety at the time Paul wrote this letter. They were anxious about disunity and quarrels within the church. We saw this last week with the dispute between Euodia and Syntyche. The church was also worried about destructive false teachers (Judaizers and prosperity gospel). Their founder, their pastor, Paul, who had discipled them and grown them in their faith was locked up in a prison in Rome hundreds of miles away from them. This young church plant faced some significant threats and so they were understandably anxious. Paul speaks directly into this situation in this text. What we will see that because God grants us his peace in Christ, there is no need to be anxious. Instead we can rejoice in the Lord.

I don’t think is one of us who has not been hurt by someone else. Perhaps we’ve been had false accusations levelled against us, hurtful and damaging words exchanged, betrayal, promises not kept, possibly leading to a complete breakdown of a relationship. Unfortunately this is life, and this is reality of this sin-cursed world – brokenness in relationships because we’re all sinners. Yet what happens when a relationship breakdown happens in the church, between brothers and sisters in Christ? How do we deal with this?
We need to remember that this is nothing new, even in the church, Paul and Barnabas had a fall out because of John Mark in Acts 13. And in this passage, two ladies in the Philippian church, Euodia and Syntyche also had a falling out. How then are we to deal with relational breakdowns amongst believers? What we will see from this text is that because we’ve been reconciled to Christ and our names have been written in the book of life, we have no option but to be reconciled.
