Michel de Nostredame, or more popularly, Nostradamus, was a French occultist and astrologer who lived during the sixteenth century. He was famous for writing reams of supposed prophecies, written in poetry form. Since his death, many people have tried to interpret his prophecies and claim that he predicated momentous historical events hundreds of years before they happened. Yet if you actually read his works, you will find that they are so vague and cryptic, that you could read anything into them.
This is so completely different from the prophecies we find in the Bible. We'll see this in this text. Joseph is given a special ability by God to interpret dreams and through them, speak God's prophetic Word. Joseph’s interpretations, prophetic words, are anything but vague and wishy-washy. They are clear, unambiguous and very specific – and every single one of them comes true. These are the characteristics of genuine biblical prophecies – none of this “I sense…, I have some kind of a feeling etc.” – no – declaration of God’s Word, which is clear, true and never returns void. What we will see in this passage is that because God is sovereign, he will achieve all his purposes through his Word, he will not fail.

Imagine one day you are going about your business and suddenly a group of men bundle you inside a van, kidnap you. You realise that you’ve been human trafficked. Not only do you end up as a slave, but because of the type of things you’re forced to do, you then end up in prison with a life sentence. You would surely think God has left you, break down in hopelessness. While the probability of something like this happening to any of us is very low, the point is that when we’re plunged into tragic circumstances, our tendency is to think that we’re living outside of God’s will and that he’s somehow abandoned us.
This is precisely what happened to Joseph – he was sold into slavery and ended up in prison. Yet, God never abandoned him. In fact, this was all part of God’s good and perfect will for Joseph – God worked out his plan for Joseph’s life in the midst of being in the valley of the shadow of death. What we will see this morning is that because God is with us, he sustains us through good times and bad times.
Preacher: Rev. Antonio Coppola.

We live in interesting times here in South Africa. There is a strong likelihood that our government has been selling arms to Russia, aiding them in the war against Ukraine. Us Durbanites are going to get our fair share of loadshedding starting this week. And laws are about to be passed that will severely restrict minorities from being employed in the private sector. This can seem overwhelming and we can feel helpless at times to be in the midst of such injustice, evil and wickedness. We have to ask, where is God in all this? Can he still accomplish his purposes in this mess, in this sin-cursed world?
Wicked and sordid events unfold in our passage this morning. We are introduced to Judah and his sons, and their acts of wickedness. We can only understand just how wicked they are by looking back to Genesis 12 and 15. There God promises Abraham that he will multiply his offspring – as numerous as the stars in the sky and that through his seed all the nations of the world will be blessed. Judah is Abraham’s great-grandson and as we will see in this text, he and his sons intentionally try to frustrate these promises that God made to Abraham, because of their own selfishness and greed. What we will see is that because God is sovereign and faithful, his plans cannot be thwarted and he will achieve his purposes even through human sinfulness and faithlessness.

The Christian life can get depressing at times. Sometimes you feel as if you are fighting a losing battle against sin. Sometimes you feel like a weirdo for believing the things you believe, especially when you’re ridiculed by friends and family. And then what’s even more discouraging is when you see false teaching and funny business within the broader church. Perhaps you’ve thought, is this really worth it? Is God really going to achieve all his purposes in this world, for his church, in this mess?
Well we’ve finally reached the end of 1 Timothy. In this concluding passage, Paul gives his final charge to Timothy, in the midst of his very challenging church situation, riddled with false teachers, heresies, sins and divisions. What we will see from this text, which lies at the heart of Paul’s charge to Timothy is because Christ is the sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords, we are to fight the good fight of the faith.
Preacher: Rev. Antonio Coppola.
