This passage was written to Christians in the first century who were facing extreme hardships: state-sponsored persecutions, they were ostracized from their community, pressured to abandon their faith and church was illegal. How were they to respond to these trials? Peter encourages them to endure. We will see that because our inheritance in Christ is imperishable and we have a living hope, we can rejoice in the midst of suffering.
