We live in an incredibly fast-paced world. We’re constantly bombarded with information through social media, TV and 24 hour news networks. Many of our jobs are demanding more of us, demanding that we work longer and longer hours. If you have kids at school, their schools are demanding more of them – more homework, endless extra mural activities and sports that encroach on the little free time that is available.
The result? Huge increase in depression, divorce, burn out, broken families and Christians having very little time for God, prayer, worship and meaningful study of his Word. This generation of Christians is one of the most biblically illiterate generations to have ever lived, despite the fact that the Bible is the most accessible that it’s ever been in any era of human history.
In this sermon, we look at the Fourth Commandment concerning the Sabbath. It matters to God how we work and how we rest. In fact, our working and resting rhythms are to be rooted in the pattern that God himself has established. In the midst of a busy, burnt out world, God has graciously provided us with the gift and blessing of the Sabbath, one day of the week where we are able to find true rest and peace in God himself. What we’re going to see is that because God rested on the Sabbath, because he blessed it and made it holy, we are to keep the Lord’s day holy, finding our rest in Christ.
Preacher: Rev. Antonio Coppola.

How we speak about people reveals what we really think of them. If we’re always pulling them down, gossiping about them, treating them with disrespect, we betray our true feelings towards them. On the other hand, if we speak kindly about someone, only sing theirpraises and honour them with our words, it shows our respect and love for them.
In this sermon, we’ll be looking at the Third Commandment. This Commandment speaks into the way in which we speak about God and how we use his name. Like our speech about others reveals our heart towards them, our speech about God shows up what we reallythink about him. Since the Lord is infinitely more important than any person on earth, we need to take care how we use his name – and not take it in vain. What we’re going to see is that because the Lord is holy, we are to hallow his name, we are to respect his name.

These days it’s common to hear in Christian circles that it doesn’t really matter how you worship, as long as you are sincere in your worship to God, that’s the important thing. Diverse expressions of worship are welcomed, especially the use of our creativity in worship. These can be expressed in many forms in the worship service, from coloured lights, smoke machines, candles, incense, the use of dance, drama; or pictures, artworks, icons, crucifixes and films depicting either of the three Persons of the Godhead. It is said that these things can help us to focus on God more and improve our worship of him.
In this sermon we look at the Second Commandment. On the surface, the command forbids the production of images related to the worship of God. While it most certainly does forbid depicting God in any way, what we are going to see is that this command is much more comprehensive than that. In fact, the Second Commandment speaks into every aspect of our worship to the Lord. We’ll see that because God is a jealous God, we must worship him according to how he has commanded us in his Word.

A church I once attended used to have a big board at the back of the church which displayed the Ten Commandments. It had presumably been there since the church was built. But one Sunday I noticed that the board had been quietly removed. There was no explanation, no reason given. But one can only assume that the reason was that the leadership no longer believed that the law was relevant for Christians. Why else would you remove the Ten Commandments from a church?
This example reveals one of two common errors that Christians often tend toward concerning the law. The first is illustrated in the story I’ve just shared – the belief that the law is not binding upon Christians, instead it’s all about grace. This view has always been around, the apostles confront this view in the New Testament, and it's known as antinomianism (no law). The second view is that it’s our obedience to the law that makes us right with God, or salvation through law keeping. This is also known as legalism. Biblical Christianity is neither of these views.
In this sermon we are going to focus on the prologue to the Ten Commandments (the first two verses of Exodus 20), before getting into each of the Commandments. We will first get an overview before we take a deep dive. In doing this, we’re going to look at the authority and relevance of the law for us as believers in Christ. What we’re going to see is that because Christ has saved us, we have been set free to obey him.
